Normalization of von Willebrand factor in a patient with type I von Willebrand disease and HIV infection. OBJECTIVE: To describe a patient with von Willebrand disease (vWD) who, 7 years after seroconversion to HIV, had normalization of vW factor antigen (vWF-Ag) levels. In 1986, she was found to be seropositive for HIV. Increased levels of vWF are commonly seen in patients with vasculitis and has been regarded as a reliable index of vascular damage. A well described consequence of HIV infection is endothelial cell stimulation with elevation of vWF levels. In this patient there was a temporal relation between the recovery of normal vWF levels and seroconversion to HIV, which suggests that endothelial cell stimulation, through a direct or indirect effect of HIV, allowed the restoration of normal hemostasis
